How Skinfold Measurement Works

The skinfold method estimates body fat by measuring the thickness of fat just beneath the skin at several body sites. A pair of calipers pinches a fold of skin and the underlying subcutaneous fat, and the millimeter reading reflects how much fat is stored there. Because subcutaneous fat makes up a fairly predictable share of total body fat, summing readings from a few sites gives a reliable estimate of the whole.

The most widely used equations come from Jackson and Pollock, who in the late 1970s built regression formulas linking skinfold sums to body density measured by underwater weighing. Their three-site protocol is popular because it balances accuracy with speed. The calculator takes your site readings, computes body density, then converts that density into a fat percentage. Done by a trained person, skinfold testing is one of the more accurate field methods available, and it samples fat directly rather than inferring it from circumferences like the US Navy tape approach.

The Jackson-Pollock 3-Site Formula

The three-site method uses different sites for each sex. Men measure chest, abdomen, and thigh; women measure triceps, suprailiac, and thigh. Let SS be the sum of the three skinfolds in millimeters and AA be age in years. Body density is found first:

The squared term makes the relationship curved, because each added millimeter of fat contributes a little less as folds grow thicker. Age is included since fat distribution shifts over the years. The body density is then converted to a fat percentage with the Siri equation:

The constants 495 and 450 come from the average densities of fat and lean tissue. A man with a 45 mm skinfold sum at age 30 lands near 15% body fat.

Using Calipers Correctly

Caliper technique is what separates a good skinfold estimate from a poor one. Always measure on the right side of the body. Pinch the fold firmly between thumb and forefinger about 1 cm above the site, then place the caliper jaws on the site itself and read after two seconds, once the needle settles. Lift only skin and fat, not muscle.

Know each landmark. The chest fold runs diagonally between nipple and armpit, the abdomen is vertical beside the navel, the thigh is vertical on the front midline, the triceps is vertical on the back of the upper arm, and the suprailiac is diagonal just above the hip bone. Take two readings at each site and average them, adding a third if they differ by more than 2 mm. Measure before exercise, since training pushes fluid into the skin and inflates readings. Spring-loaded calipers apply a standard pressure, which is why they beat plastic ones for repeatable numbers.

Interpreting Your Skinfold Result

Once the calculator converts your skinfold sum into a percentage, you can place it against standard fitness ranges. For men, athletes typically sit around 6% to 13%, the fitness range is 14% to 17%, and average is 18% to 24%. Women run higher across every category because of essential reproductive fat, with athletes near 14% to 20%.

The real value of skinfold testing shows up over time. Retesting every four to six weeks reveals whether a training and nutrition plan is reducing fat, even when scale weight barely moves. Because the same tester and the same sites are used each time, the trend is more trustworthy than any single reading. Keep in mind the Siri conversion assumes standard tissue densities, so results can drift for very lean, very old, or certain ethnic groups. For a no-caliper cross-check, compare against the BMI-based or RFM estimates to see where the methods agree.

Strengths and Limits of Skinfold Testing

Skinfold testing measures fat directly at the skin, which makes it more accurate than methods that infer fat from weight or circumference. In trained hands it lands within 3% to 4% of a DEXA scan, and the equipment is inexpensive and portable. Sampling several sites also captures regional fat patterns that single-tape methods miss.

The drawbacks center on the tester. Results depend heavily on consistent site location and pinch technique, so two people testing the same person can disagree if their methods differ. The equations also assume a typical relationship between subcutaneous and internal fat, which can break down for very lean athletes, older adults, or people with unusual fat distribution. Calipers cannot reach visceral fat at all. For most people who want a repeatable field measurement and are willing to learn the technique, skinfolds remain a strong choice. Pair the result with the US Navy tape method when you want a second estimate that needs no calipers.
