The Three Percentage Questions

Every percentage problem you will ever meet has one of three shapes. The first asks for the part: what is 25% of 80? The second asks for the rate: 12 is what percent of 48? The third asks for the whole: 30 is 20% of what number? Recognizing the shape is most of the work, because each shape has its own one-line formula. A quick test is to ask which piece is missing. If you know the percent and the base, you are finding the part. If you know two plain numbers and want to compare one against the other, you are finding the rate. If you know the part and the percent it represents, you are working backwards to the whole. How Each Formula Works

Percent means per hundred, so every percentage is a fraction with a fixed denominator, and each of the three questions rearranges that same fraction. To find the part, convert the percent to a decimal and multiply: result=P100×B\text{result} = \frac{P}{100} \times B Taking 25% of 80 means 80 times 0.25, which is 20. To find the rate, divide the part by the whole and scale back up with P=XY×100P = \frac{X}{Y} \times 100: since 12 divided by 48 is 0.25, 12 is 25% of 48. To find the whole, divide the part by the rate as a decimal with B=XP/100B = \frac{X}{P/100}: if 30 is 20% of something, that something is 30 divided by 0.2, which is 150. Decimals work the same way in every mode, so 7.5% of 240 comes out as 18 with no extra steps. Everyday Scenarios

Most percentage math happens far from a classroom. A restaurant bill of $60.00 with an 18% tip adds $10.80; a sales tax of 8% on a $250.00 purchase adds $20.00; a salesperson on a 5% commission earns $1,500.00 on a $30,000.00 deal. Mental Math Shortcuts

You can estimate most everyday percentages without any calculator by building on 10%. Shifting the decimal point one place to the left gives 10% instantly: for 350 that is 35. Halve it for 5%, which is 17.5, and add the two together for 15%, which is 52.5. The other building block is 1%, found by shifting the decimal two places, so 1% of 350 is 3.5; stack copies of it to reach awkward rates like 3% or 12%. Two more tricks help. Percentages commute, so 8% of 50 equals 50% of 8, and the second version is far easier to see at a glance. And a 20% tip is simply 10% doubled. These shortcuts will not replace exact answers on an invoice, but they are perfect for checking that a calculated result lands in the right neighborhood before you trust it.

Common Mistakes

The most frequent percentage error is applying the rate to the wrong base. A price that rises 20% and then falls 20% does not return to where it started, because the second 20% is taken from a larger number: 100 becomes 120, and 20% off 120 is 24, landing at 96. The same trap catches people who add percentages with different bases, such as treating a 10% tax and a 10% service charge as a flat 20% when one is applied after the other. Another classic is confusing a percentage of a value with a change measured in percentage points, a distinction that matters for interest rates and poll results. What does percent actually mean?

Percent means per hundred, so a percentage is a fraction whose denominator is always one hundred. Saying 25% is the same as saying twenty-five parts out of every hundred, or the decimal 0.25. That fixed base is what makes percentages comparable across different quantities, from exam scores to interest rates to battery levels.

How do I work out what percent one number is of another?

Divide the first number by the second and multiply by one hundred. To find what percent 12 is of 48, compute 12 divided by 48 to get 0.25, then scale up to 25%. The order matters: the number that follows the word of is always the base and belongs in the denominator.

How do I calculate a tip or tax quickly without a calculator?

Start from 10% by shifting the decimal point one place to the left, then combine. On a $60.00 bill, 10% is $6.00, half of that gives 5%, and adding them makes a 15% tip of $9.00. For tax, 1% comes from shifting two places, so stacking copies of it reaches almost any local rate.

Can a percentage be greater than 100 or negative?

Yes to both. A percentage above one hundred simply means more than the whole base, so 300 is 200% of 150. Negative percentages describe decreases or values below zero, which is routine in finance when returns fall.
