What Percentage Change Measures

Percentage change answers how big a move is relative to where it started, which is a different question from how big the move is in raw units. Gaining 10 points from a base of 20 means the value grew by half, a 50% change, while the same 10 points on a base of 2,000 is a barely visible 0.5%. Absolute change reports the raw gap and relative change reports that gap scaled by the starting value, and both are useful: the raw figure tells you what actually hits your wallet, the relative one tells you whether the move is dramatic. The Formula and Its Direction

Going from 80 to 100 gives a positive 25%, an increase; going from 100 to 80 gives a negative 20%, a decrease. Those two results are not mirror images, and that is the crucial detail: the same pair of numbers produces different magnitudes depending on which one plays the base. The initial value sits in the denominator because change is always judged against where you began, not where you ended. From 50 to 75 is therefore a 50% rise, since the gap of 25 is half the starting value. The tool labels every result as an increase, a decrease, or no change, so the sign never needs interpreting.

The Asymmetry Trap

Percentage changes do not cancel out, and the steeper the drop, the more brutal the recovery. Suppose a stock falls 50% from $100.00 to $50.00. To climb back to $100.00 it must gain $50.00 on a base of $50.00, which is a 100% rise, double the percentage it lost. The effect scales viciously: a 75% collapse, like a slide from 200 to 50, needs a 300% rally just to break even. The asymmetry exists because the base shrinks on the way down, so every percent of recovery is measured against a smaller number than every percent of loss was. This is why long losing streaks are so hard to repair in investing, and why a shop that cuts prices by 20% cannot restore them with a 20% markup. Where It Shows Up

Relative change is the default vocabulary of comparison. Investors quote stock returns as percentage moves because a $5.00 swing means something entirely different on a $20.00 share than on a $900.00 one. Retailers track price changes the same way, and a salary going from $4,000.00 to $4,600.00 is more naturally described as a 15% raise than as a raw gap. Demographers report population growth in percent so that towns and countries land on one comparable scale, and website owners read traffic that moves from 8,000 to 10,000 visits as a 25% jump. In every one of these cases the number points one way, up or down from a known starting point. Percentage Change vs Percentage Points

When the quantities being compared are themselves percentages, two different measures share the stage, and headlines routinely blur them. An interest rate that moves from 4% to 6% has risen 2 percentage points, the plain difference between the two figures. But relative to its starting level the rate grew by half, a 50% percentage change, because the gap of 2 is divided by the base of 4. Both statements are true and they answer different questions: points describe the absolute shift in the rate, while percentage change describes how large that shift is compared with where it began. The distinction matters in loan pricing, poll swings, and market share reports, where a small move in points can be an enormous relative change. Percentage points measure the plain gap between two percentages, while percentage change measures that gap relative to the starting value. A rate going from 4% to 6% rose 2 percentage points but recorded a 50% percentage change, since 2 is half of the starting 4. Use points for absolute shifts and percentage change for relative size.

How do I calculate the percentage change between two numbers?

Subtract the initial value from the final value, divide by the initial value, and multiply by one hundred. From 80 to 100 the gap is 20, and 20 divided by 80 gives 25%. A positive result means an increase and a negative one a decrease; this tool also shows the absolute change for context.

Why does a price that drops 20% not return to normal after rising 20%?

Because the two percentages are taken from different bases. A $100.00 price cut by 20% lands at $80.00, but raising $80.00 by 20% adds only $16.00, reaching $96.00. The rebound is measured against the smaller number, so fully recovering from a 20% drop actually requires a 25% rise.

What is the percentage change when the starting value is zero or negative?

When the initial value is zero the percentage change is undefined, because dividing by zero has no meaning; this tool explains that instead of showing infinity. Negative starting values are handled by dividing by the absolute value of the initial number, so the sign of the result still reports the true direction of the move rather than being flipped by the negative base.
