Two Ways to Ask About Decrease

People mean two different things when they ask about a percentage decrease, and this calculator handles both. The first question looks backward: a value fell from one number to another, and you want to know by what percent it dropped. Going from 60 to 45 is a 25% decrease, because the fall of 15 is a quarter of the starting value. The second question looks forward: you have a number and want to know what remains after cutting a given percent from it. Decreasing 900 by 30% leaves 630. The Formulas, Worked Slowly

The Recovery Asymmetry

The percentages differ because each one is measured against a different base. The fall is divided by 100, the recovery by the smaller 75, and a fixed gap of 25 is a bigger share of a smaller number. Is a percentage decrease the same as a discount?

The math is the same; a discount is simply a percentage decrease applied to a price. A 30% discount on a $90.00 item leaves $63.00, exactly what mode two of this calculator computes. Discount tools just add shopping framing on top, such as the amount saved and reverse lookup from a sale price.

How do I take a percentage off a number?

Multiply the number by one minus the rate written as a decimal. To take 30% off 900, multiply by 0.7 to get 630. The keep-rate shortcut works for any cut: removing 35% means keeping 65% of the value, so 240 becomes 156 in a single multiplication.

I went from one value to a lower one, what percent did I lose?

Divide the drop by the starting value and multiply by one hundred. Going from 60 to 45 means losing 15 from a base of 60, which is a 25% decrease. The starting value is always the denominator, so the same drop from a larger start produces a smaller percentage.

Can something decrease by more than 100%?

Only if the value can go negative. A quantity that cannot fall below zero, like a price or a weight, maxes out at a 100% decrease, which means it dropped all the way to zero. Figures such as profit can swing negative, so a profit falling from 40 to -20 is a 150% decrease.
