What Percent Error Tells You
Percent error measures how close a measurement came to the value it was supposed to hit. It compares your measured or experimental result against a true or accepted value and expresses the gap as a share of that truth, so results from different experiments become comparable on a single scale. An error of 2% on a length and an error of 2% on a mass represent the same relative accuracy even though the raw gaps look nothing alike. The word error here does not mean a mistake: every real measurement carries some error, because instruments have finite precision and conditions are never perfectly controlled. A student who measures gravity and lands within a few percent of the accepted value has done careful work, not sloppy work.
