Getting Real UPC Numbers

A barcode generator turns digits into bars, but the digits themselves must come from a legitimate source if you sell at retail. In the United States and Canada, GS1 US issues company prefixes, and the numbers built on a GS1 prefix are recognized by retailers and marketplaces as genuine. Many sellers run into trouble with reseller codes bought cheaply online, since some retailers and marketplaces reject numbers that do not trace back to a GS1 prefix registered to the seller. Before you commit a number to packaging, confirm where it came from and whether your target channels accept it. Is UPC-A the same as EAN-13?

They are closely related but not identical. UPC-A is a 12-digit code and EAN-13 is a 13-digit code. A UPC-A number is equivalent to an EAN-13 number with a leading zero added in front, so the two encode the same product when that zero is included. How many digits do I enter?
