From ISBN to Barcode

Every commercially published book carries an ISBN, and on the cover that number appears as a scannable barcode. Modern ISBNs are 13 digits long and begin with the Bookland prefixes 978 or 979. Those prefixes were reserved so that books could join the global EAN-13 retail system, which means an ISBN-13 is a valid EAN-13 number. The same check digit math applies, so the barcode you generate here scans at any retail till exactly like a product barcode. Anatomy of an ISBN

An ISBN-13 looks like a single string of 13 digits, but it is built from five meaningful parts. The first is the prefix, 978 or 979, which ties the number to the Bookland EAN range. Next comes the registration group, identifying a country, region, or language area. After that is the registrant element, which names the publisher and varies in length depending on how many titles that publisher expects to issue. The fourth part is the publication element, the specific edition or format of the title. The final digit is the check digit, calculated from the preceding twelve using an alternating weight of 1 and 3. When those weighted digits are summed, the check digit is whatever value brings the total to a multiple of 10. This structure is why two formats of the same book, paperback and hardcover, carry different ISBNs even though the content matches. The barcode encodes all thirteen digits, and the check digit lets scanners confirm an error-free read before passing the number to a catalog system.

Getting an ISBN for Your Book

An ISBN is not generated by a barcode tool; it is assigned by a national registration agency before you create the barcode. Each country or language region has its own agency, and the prefix and registration group in your ISBN reflect where it was issued. Publishers usually buy a block of numbers at once, since every format and edition of a title needs its own ISBN. A print paperback, a hardcover, and an ebook of the same book each consume a separate number from the block. Self-publishing authors can buy a single ISBN or a small block directly from their national agency, or accept a free number provided by some distribution platforms, though platform-supplied numbers list that platform as the publisher of record. Once you hold a valid ISBN-13, this generator turns it into the scannable Bookland EAN-13 image your printer needs. Placing the Barcode on a Cover

By convention the ISBN barcode sits in the lower right area of a book's back cover, clear of the spine and trim edges. Print it against a plain white or very light background, because scanners rely on strong contrast between the dark bars and the light spaces. Keep a quiet zone, an empty margin, on the left and right of the symbol so the scanner can find the start and stop patterns. Size matters too: shrinking the barcode below roughly 80% of nominal size risks unreliable reads, so use the scale control here to hold a safe magnification. Many printed books also carry a separate 5 digit add-on barcode to the right of the main symbol, encoding the suggested retail price or a currency indicator. That price add-on is an EAN-5 extension and is handled outside this tool. ISBN-10 and the Switch to ISBN-13

Books published before January 1, 2007 often carry a 10 digit ISBN, the older format used before the industry aligned with the global EAN-13 system. An ISBN-10 cannot be encoded directly as a Bookland EAN-13 barcode, so it has to be converted first. The conversion is straightforward: drop the old check digit, prepend the 978 prefix to the remaining nine digits, and recalculate a fresh check digit using the EAN-13 weighting. The result is the same book with a 13 digit identifier that scans at retail. This tool works with ISBN-13 input, so if you only have a legacy ISBN-10 you convert it to ISBN-13 before generating the barcode. The registrant and publication portions stay the same through conversion, which is why catalogs can reliably match an old ISBN-10 to its ISBN-13 twin without losing any of the original metadata. Is an ISBN barcode different from a normal EAN-13 barcode?

Not in how it scans. An ISBN-13 that begins with 978 or 979 is a valid EAN-13 number, so the barcode uses the same encoding and check digit math as any retail product symbol. The difference is purely meaning: the Bookland prefix tells the supply chain the item is a book, and the human-readable ISBN is printed above the bars. A scanner reads it exactly like a grocery item.

Can I paste the ISBN with hyphens?

Yes. ISBNs are usually written with hyphens separating the prefix, group, registrant, publication, and check digit, and this tool accepts that format. The hyphens are stripped automatically before the barcode is drawn, so you can paste the number exactly as it appears on your metadata record without cleaning it up first.

Do I need a separate barcode for the price?

Only if you want the price encoded on the cover. Many printed books carry a small 5 digit add-on barcode to the right of the main ISBN symbol that holds a suggested retail price or a currency code. That add-on is an EAN-5 extension and is generated separately from the main ISBN barcode. The main Bookland EAN-13 symbol works on its own without it.

What about old 10-digit ISBNs?

Books from before the 13 digit standard often carry a 10 digit ISBN. To barcode one, convert it to ISBN-13 first: prepend the 978 prefix to the first nine digits and recalculate the check digit with EAN-13 weighting. Then feed the resulting ISBN-13 into this generator. The book stays the same; only the identifier format changes.

What do the 978 and 979 prefixes mean?

They are the Bookland prefixes reserved inside the EAN-13 numbering system for books. The 978 range was used first and is now largely exhausted in some areas, which is why the 979 range was opened to supply more numbers. Both signal to retail and library systems that the scanned item is a publication rather than a general consumer product.

Should I download the barcode as PNG or SVG?

Choose SVG when you are placing the barcode inside a cover layout and want it to scale without losing sharpness, since it stays crisp at any size. Choose PNG when your template or printer expects a fixed raster image. Either format keeps the bars and the printed ISBN intact, so both scan reliably as long as you keep the symbol at a safe size with a clear quiet zone around it.
