The rounded bar means one finger presses all those strings at that fret; the small number beside the grid is the fret the diagram starts on.

Both diagrams are the same chord in different positions: the barre version moves one familiar shape up the neck, which is why learning five open shapes unlocks every key.

How to read a chord diagram

A chord diagram is a picture of the fretboard as you see it holding the guitar upright: six vertical lines for the strings, horizontal lines for the frets. The leftmost vertical line is the low E, the sixth string, and the rightmost is the high E, the first string.

Above the diagram, two markers say what to do with each string before you fret anything. An O means play the string open, unfretted. An X means do not play it, either by skipping it or by muting it with a fingertip. Getting these wrong is the most common reason a correctly fingered chord sounds muddy.

Dots inside the grid mark where fingers go. A dot sits in the space between two fret lines, meaning press the string down in that space, not on the metal wire itself.

A thick bar spanning several strings is a barre: one finger laid flat across all of them at that fret, usually the index.

When a shape sits up the neck rather than at the nut, a small number beside the diagram gives the starting fret. Without it you would have no way to tell a shape at fret 1 from the identical shape at fret 8.

The tool draws two diagrams for most chords, an open-position shape and a movable barre shape, and each has its own Strum button so you can hear the voicing before deciding which to use. Everything is standard tuning, E2 A2 D3 G3 B3 E4.

Open shapes and barre shapes are the same thing

The five open shapes named by the CAGED system, C, A, G, E and D, are not five isolated chords. They are five templates, and every barre chord on the instrument is one of them slid up the neck with a finger replacing the nut.

That is literally what a barre finger does. The nut stops all six strings at fret zero; a barre stops them at fret nn. The shape above it is unchanged, so the intervals are unchanged, and the chord is the same quality with a different root.

The shift follows one calculation:

The E form has its root on the sixth string, and the A form on the fifth. So B minor is the A-minor shape barred at fret 2, and Bb major can be the A form at fret 1 or the E form at fret 6. Both are Bb, both contain the same notes.

F major is the case that makes this concrete. There is no open F shape, because F sits one semitone above E, so the E form barred at fret 1 is the chord. Beginners meet F as a wall for exactly this reason and it is not a special chord, just the first one that requires a barre.

Two positions for one chord is not redundancy. The lower position has a deeper bass note and more open ring; the higher one is brighter and thinner. Choosing between them is arranging. A capo does the same job mechanically, which is what a capo position finder works out.

The chord families in the picker

Eight chord types cover the overwhelming majority of popular music, and each has a recognisable job.

Major is the bright, resolved sound: root, major third, fifth. Minor flattens that third by one semitone and the whole character turns darker without anything else changing. That one note is the entire difference.

Power chords, labelled 5, drop the third altogether and keep only the root and fifth. With no third they are neither major nor minor, which is precisely why they work under distortion: ambiguity survives heavy gain where a third turns muddy.

The sevenths add a fourth note and each has a distinct flavour. A plain 7 is the dominant seventh, restless and pulling toward resolution, which is the blues and every turnaround. m7 is a minor chord with a softened edge, the staple of soul and neo-soul. maj7 adds a major seventh instead and sounds dreamy and settled rather than tense.

Suspended chords replace the third with a neighbouring note. sus2 uses the second, sus4 the fourth. Neither is major or minor, and both create a pull back toward the plain chord. Dsus2 and Dsus4 each differ from D major by a single note, which is why moving between them feels like breathing rather than changing chord.

Hearing the difference is faster than reading about it. Pick a root, cycle the type chips, and strum each one. The tool synthesises every voicing on the spot rather than playing samples, so what you hear is exactly the notes in the diagram.

Practising chords that actually ring

A chord that buzzes is usually a placement problem, not a strength problem. Three habits fix most of it.

Press with the fingertip, just behind the fret rather than in the middle of the space. The closer to the fret wire, the less force it takes to stop the string cleanly. Pressing in the middle of a fret space needs noticeably more grip and still buzzes.

Keep fingers arched so the pads do not touch neighbouring strings. A collapsed knuckle mutes the string next door, which produces the specific frustration of a chord where one note is missing for no visible reason. Check by playing each string of the chord one at a time.

For barres, the thumb matters more than the index finger. Place the thumb behind the neck roughly opposite the barre and let the hand squeeze from both sides instead of pulling with the index alone. Rolling the barre finger slightly onto its outer edge, away from the flat pad, puts bone rather than soft tissue behind the strings and takes much less effort.

Muting is an active skill. When a diagram shows an X, that string needs to be silenced, most often by letting the underside of a fretting finger rest lightly against it.

Check tuning before blaming technique. A chord that sounds wrong when every finger is right is frequently a tuning problem, and a chromatic tuner settles that question in seconds.

Common mistakes

Pressing directly on top of the fret wire mutes the string almost completely. The finger belongs in the space behind the wire, and moving a couple of millimetres is often the whole fix for a chord that seemed impossible.

Letting the barre finger collapse at the middle joint is the classic barre failure. The soft crease of the joint lands on a string and silences it, usually the second or third. Rolling slightly onto the side of the finger puts firmer tissue in contact and solves it without extra grip strength.

Strumming strings marked X adds notes that do not belong to the chord. On an A-form barre the sixth string is muted, and letting it ring adds a bass note a fourth below the root, which makes the chord sound unresolved.

Giving up on F too early is worth naming specifically, because it stops more beginners than any other chord. F is the first shape that requires a barre, and barre strength takes weeks rather than days. Practising it as a partial barre across the first two strings is a legitimate intermediate step.

Reading a shape up the neck without checking the fret number produces the right shape in the wrong key. The small number beside the diagram is the difference between Bb and F.

One conceptual mix-up: seeing the same chord at two frets and assuming one must be wrong. Both are correct, containing the same notes in different orders and registers, and the choice is about tone and what comes before and after.

Why do some chords have no open version?

Because open shapes depend on which strings happen to be the right notes when unfretted, and that only works for a few roots. F sits one semitone above E, so the E shape moved up one fret is the chord, and the nut has to be replaced by a barre finger. There is nothing special about F beyond being the first chord that requires it.

How do I make barre chords sound clean?

Roll the barre finger slightly onto its outer edge so bone rather than the soft pad presses the strings, and place the thumb behind the neck opposite the barre so the hand squeezes from both sides. Press just behind the fret wire. Then play each string individually to find which one the finger joint is muting.

Which chords should a beginner learn first?

Em, Am, C, G and D open the most songs for the least effort, and all five avoid barres. Add D and A minor shapes next, then F as the first barre. Practising the transitions between pairs matters more than adding new shapes.

Why does the same chord appear at two different frets?

Because the same notes can be arranged in different orders and registers. A lower position keeps a deeper bass note and more open ring, while a higher one is brighter and thinner. Both are the chord, and choosing between them is arranging rather than correctness.

What is the difference between a power chord and a major chord?

Are the finger numbers shown on the diagrams?

No, the diagrams show positions as dots without finger numbers, since sensible fingering depends on what comes before and after the chord. Use the shape as the target and choose fingers that make the next change easiest.

Does this work for other tunings or a capo?

The diagrams assume standard tuning, E2 A2 D3 G3 B3 E4, in this version. With a capo the shapes still work but the sounding chord moves up one semitone per fret, and a capo position finder converts between the shape and the key. Before deciding a chord sounds wrong, check the guitar with a chromatic tuner.
