How QR Codes Work

A QR code stores data in a grid of black and white squares called modules. The three large squares in the corners are finder patterns that let a scanner locate and orient the code from any angle. Smaller alignment and timing patterns keep the grid readable even when the image is tilted or slightly distorted.

The amount of data you encode determines the version, which is the size of the grid. Short links use a small version with few modules, while long text needs a larger grid with many more squares. Error Correction Levels

QR codes include redundant data so they still scan when part of the image is dirty, scratched or covered. You choose how much redundancy through the error correction level. Level L recovers about 7 percent of the code, M about 15 percent, Q about 25 percent, and H about 30 percent.

Higher correction sounds better, but it has a cost. The extra recovery data takes up modules, so a level H code holds less information than a level L code of the same size, or it grows to a larger version. For a plain link on a clean screen, L or M is usually enough.

Level H pays off when the code will be printed small, placed on packaging that bends, or covered by a logo overlay. The redundant data lets the scanner reconstruct the missing modules. If you add a logo, raise the level to Q or H so the hidden area stays recoverable.

Design Choices That Affect Scanning

A QR code only scans reliably when the camera can tell modules apart. The single most important factor is contrast. Keep the dark modules genuinely dark and the background genuinely light. Pale gray on white or two similar mid-tones will frustrate scanners even when the code looks fine to the eye.

The quiet zone is the empty margin around the code. The standard recommends a clear border of at least four modules on every side. Without it, a busy background bleeds into the finder patterns and the scanner cannot lock on, so always leave that breathing room even when space feels tight.

Size matters on print. A common rule of thumb is that the code should be about one tenth of the scanning distance, so a code read from 30 cm away needs to be roughly 3 cm across. Increase the scale for posters and signage read from further back, and test the printed result before any large run.

PNG vs SVG Output

What does the error correction level change?

Most scanners expect dark modules on a light background, which mirrors how the standard describes a code. When you invert it to light modules on a dark background, many cameras cannot interpret the finder patterns and refuse to read it. Some modern apps handle inversion, but you cannot rely on it. Keep the dark-on-light convention, and use color for the dark modules rather than flipping the whole scheme.

Will the QR code stop working after a while?

No. The codes from this tool are static, which means the data is baked directly into the image. There is no server, redirect, or account behind the code, so it keeps working as long as the content it points to still exists. A code that links to a webpage only fails if that page is taken down. The code itself never expires.

Can I add a logo in the middle of the code?

You can overlay a small logo, but plan for it with the error correction level. The logo covers some modules, so raise the level to Q or H before generating. That gives the scanner enough redundant data to reconstruct the hidden area. Keep the logo small, ideally covering no more than the center, and always test the final image to confirm it still scans reliably.
