What is IndexNow Protocol?

IndexNow is an open-source protocol that allows website owners to instantly notify search engines when URLs are added, updated, or deleted on their websites. Instead of waiting for search engines to discover changes through crawling, IndexNow enables real-time notification for faster indexing.

Step 1: Generate Your IndexNow API Key

To get started with IndexNow, you need to generate a unique API key:

  1. Visit Bing IndexNow Get Started page
  2. Click on "Generate API Key" button
  3. Copy the generated 128-bit hexadecimal key (it will look like: a1b2c3d4e5f6789012345678901234567890abcdef)
  4. Save this key securely - you'll need it for verification and submissions

Important: Keep your API key safe and don't share it publicly. Each website should have its own unique key.

Step 2: Upload API Key to Your Website

After generating your API key, you must upload it to your website's root directory to verify ownership:

  1. Create a new text file named exactly like your API key (e.g., a1b2c3d4e5f6789012345678901234567890abcdef.txt)
  2. Inside this file, paste only your API key (no extra text or spaces)
  3. Upload the file to your website's root directory via FTP, cPanel, or your hosting provider's file manager
  4. The file should be accessible at: https://yourwebsite.com/your-api-key.txt

Example: If your domain is example.com and your key is abc123def456, the file should be accessible at https://example.com/abc123def456.txt

Step 3: Submit URLs to Search Engines

Once your API key is verified, you can start submitting URLs:

  1. Enter your verified API key in the "IndexNow API Key" field
  2. Add URLs you want to submit (one per line, maximum 10,000 URLs)
  3. Select action type: URL Updated (for new/modified content) or URL Deleted (for removed content)
  4. Click "Submit URLs to Search Engines"

The tool will automatically notify Bing, Yandex, and other participating search engines about your content changes.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

If you encounter problems with IndexNow submissions:

API Key Issues:

  • Invalid key format: Ensure your key is a valid 128-bit hexadecimal string
  • File not found: Check file name matches API key exactly
  • Permission denied: Verify file permissions allow public access

URL Submission Issues:

  • Invalid URLs: Ensure URLs are complete with https:// prefix
  • Too many URLs: Split large submissions into batches of 10,000 or fewer
  • Domain mismatch: Only submit URLs from the same domain as your API key

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is an IndexNow API key and how do I get one?

An IndexNow API key is a unique 128-bit hexadecimal identifier that proves you own your website. You can generate one using online tools or create your own random hex string. The key must be uploaded to your website's root directory as a text file.

How quickly do search engines index submitted URLs?

While IndexNow provides instant notification, actual indexing time varies by search engine. Bing typically processes submissions within minutes to hours, while indexing speed depends on factors like content quality, website authority, and server response times.

Can I submit multiple URLs at once?

Yes, you can submit up to 10,000 URLs per request. Simply add each URL on a new line in the submission form. This bulk submission feature is perfect for large websites with frequent updates.

Is IndexNow free to use?

Absolutely! IndexNow is completely free to use. There are no charges for API key generation, URL submissions, or using the protocol. It's an open-source initiative supported by major search engines.

What happens if I submit an invalid URL?

Invalid URLs are typically ignored by search engines. Make sure to submit valid, accessible URLs from your verified domain. The tool will validate URLs before submission to prevent common errors.

Do I need to submit URLs to each search engine separately?

No! That's the beauty of IndexNow. When you submit URLs through the protocol, all participating search engines are automatically notified. One submission reaches Bing, Yandex, and other supporting search engines.
