How to Find Your Birth Year

The rule is short: subtract your age from the current year, then subtract one more if your birthday has not happened yet this year.

birth year=current year−age  (−1 if the birthday is still ahead)\text{birth year} = \text{current year} - \text{age} \; (- 1 \text{ if the birthday is still ahead})

Say you are 28 on October 7, 2026.

  • If your birthday has already passed this year, you were born in 2026 minus 28, which is 1998.
  • If your birthday is still ahead, you have not turned 29 yet, so you were born a year earlier, in 1997.

In the calculator, choose Age → birth year, type your Age in whole years, leave As of on today, and answer Has the birthday already happened this year (as of that date)? with Yes, No or Not sure. Press Calculate and the answer appears as "You were born in 1998."

The table below adds three rows. Birth year repeats the answer. Earliest possible birth date and Latest possible birth date show the range of dates that match your age on that day. Age you turn in 2026 is the age you reach on this year's birthday: your current age if the birthday has passed, one more if it is still ahead.

The birthday counts as happened if it falls on or before the As of date, so on your birthday itself the answer is Yes.

Why There Are Two Possible Years

Age counts completed years. You are 28 from the birthday on which you turn 28 until the day before you turn 29, a window of a full year. Unless that window starts on January 1, it spans two calendar years, so an age on its own always fits two possible birth years.

The question Has the birthday already happened this year (as of that date)? picks one side of that window. It starts on Not sure, and in that case the calculator keeps both years and shows them joined with "or".

For age 28 on October 7, 2026 the three answers give:

Answer Birth year Earliest possible birth date Latest possible birth date
Yes 1998 January 1, 1998 October 7, 1998
No 1997 October 8, 1997 December 31, 1997
Not sure 1997 or 1998 October 8, 1997 October 7, 1998

The earliest date is the day after the As of date, one year further back than the age. Anyone born on that day turns 29 the day after the As of date, so they are still 28 on it. The latest date is the As of date itself, the age's number of years back: someone born then has their birthday exactly on the As of date.

The range is what an age can tell you, and no more. It cannot pin down the actual day of birth, which is why the result is a window and not a single date.

From Birth Year to Age

The second mode, Birth year → age, answers the opposite question: how old is someone born in a given year?

Enter a Birth year and press Calculate. The answer reads like "You turn 28 in 2026." That is the age reached on the birthday during the As of year, which is simply the As of year minus the birth year. The table then shows two ages for the As of date itself:

  • the age on the As of date if your birthday has passed, the same number as above
  • the age on the As of date if your birthday is still ahead, one less

With As of set to a day in 2026:

Birth year Age turned in 2026 Age if the birthday has passed Age if it is still ahead
1990 36 36 35
1998 28 28 27
2000 26 26 25
2010 16 16 15

For someone born in the As of year itself, only the first row appears, with an age of 0, since there is no earlier birthday to wait for.

The birth year can be at most 150 years before the As of year, and not after it. A year is all this mode needs, so it is quick for forms that ask "age at the end of the year" or for checking which age group a birth year falls into. If you know the full date of birth and want an exact age in years, months and days, the age calculator gives it directly.

Using a Past or Future Date

As of starts on today, but you can set it to any date. The calculation then answers the question for that day instead.

This matters most for old records. Census returns, ship manifests, marriage registers and gravestones often give an age on a known date and nothing more. The 1901 census of England and Wales was taken on March 31, 1901. If a person was listed as aged 34, set As of to that date, enter 34, keep Not sure, and the calculator returns 1866 or 1867, with possible birth dates from April 1, 1866 to March 31, 1867. Comparing that window with a second record, such as another census ten years later, often narrows it to a few months.

A future As of date works the same way. Set it to the first day of a school year, a tournament cut-off or a retirement date to see which birth years qualify, or in Birth year → age mode to see how old someone will be by then.

One combination is impossible. On December 31 every birthday of the year has already happened, so answering No on that date shows the message "On 31 December every birthday of the year has already happened. Choose Yes or Not sure." With Not sure on December 31, the calculator returns a single birth year.

International Age and East Asian Age

The calculator uses international age: the number of full years completed since birth. A newborn is 0, and the age goes up by one on each birthday. This is the standard for official documents in almost every country.

Some East Asian traditions count age differently. In these systems a baby is one year old at birth, and everyone gains a year at the same time, at the new year, not on their own birthday. Depending on when in the year someone was born, this traditional age is one or two years higher than the international age.

  • China: the traditional count, adding a year at Lunar New Year, still appears in family and cultural settings, while official records use completed years.
  • South Korea: the traditional Korean age, which added a year every January 1, was dropped for legal and administrative use in June 2023. International age is now the standard, and a few laws still use "year age", the current year minus the birth year. That equals the Age you turn in row for the current year.
  • Japan: international age is the norm, and the traditional count mostly appears in religious and ceremonial customs.

The calculator does not compute any of the traditional counts. If you are working from a traditional age, convert it to completed years first, or use the Birth year → age mode, which needs only the year.

Free, Private and No Sign-Up

The calculator runs in your browser. Your age, birth year and dates are not uploaded or stored, and there is no account to create. Use it as often as you like; results can be copied or exported as CSV, XLSX, PDF or an image without a watermark.

If your question is about a birthday rather than a year, a birthday countdown shows how long until the next one. To compare two people, an age difference calculator gives the exact gap between their birth dates, and a days-between-dates calculator counts the days between any two dates.

The ones we answer the most.

What year was I born if I am 30?

On October 8, 2026, a 30-year-old was born in 1996 if their birthday has already passed this year, or in 1995 if it is still ahead. In general, subtract 30 from the current year, then subtract one more if your birthday has not happened yet. With Not sure, the calculator shows both years and the range of possible birth dates.

How do I calculate my age from my birth year?

Subtract the birth year from the current year to get the age you turn this year. Until your birthday, your current age is one less. Choose Birth year → age in the calculator to see both numbers for any date.

Why does the calculator show two birth years?

Because you answered Not sure to the birthday question. An age covers a full year that usually spans two calendar years, so without knowing whether the birthday has passed, both years are possible. Answer Yes or No to get a single year.

What are the earliest and latest possible birth dates?

They are the first and last dates of birth that match your age on the As of date. For age 28 on October 7, 2026 with Not sure, the range runs from October 8, 1997 to October 7, 1998. An age alone cannot narrow it down to one day.

What does the age I turn this year mean when my birthday is still ahead?

It is the age you will reach on this year's birthday, one more than your age today. If you are 27 now and your birthday is in December, the Age you turn in row for this year shows 28.

Why can't I pick "No" on 31 December?

On December 31 every birthday of the year has already happened, so the birthday cannot still be ahead. The calculator asks you to choose Yes or Not sure instead, and both give the same single birth year on that date.

What if I was born on 29 February?

The year calculation is the same as for anyone else. In a common year, treat your birthday as passed from March 1, the day your age goes up. The calculator follows that rule when the As of date is February 28 in a common year.

Does the calculator use Korean or Chinese age?

No. It uses international age, the number of completed years since birth. Traditional East Asian counts start at one and add a year at the new year, so they are usually one or two years higher.

Is my age or birth date stored?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent to a server or saved.

Is the birth year calculator free, and do I need to sign up?

It is free and needs no account or sign-up. There is no usage limit, and exports to CSV, XLSX, PDF and image are included.

Birth year calculator or age calculator: which do I need?

This tool turns an age into a birth year, or a birth year into an age, when you do not have a full date of birth. If you know the full date, the age calculator gives the exact age in years, months and days.
