What Turkish Coffee Fortune Reading Is
Turkish coffee fortune reading, known as tasseography, is the practice of interpreting the shapes left by coffee grounds inside a cup. After someone finishes a cup of unfiltered Turkish coffee, the cup is turned over onto its saucer and left to cool. As the grounds slide down, they settle into lines, patches, and figures that a reader treats as symbols.
The tradition is woven into everyday social life across Turkey, the Balkans, and the Middle East, where reading a friend's cup is a warm ritual shared over conversation. Each shape carries loose, culturally shared meanings: a bird might point to news on the way, a road to a journey, a heart to matters of love. The reading is never fixed. Two readers can see the same cup and tell different, equally valid stories, because the shapes are a starting point for reflection rather than a strict code.
